Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), or Holy Basil, is grown throughout the Indian subcontinent for religious and medicinal purposes. It is widely known as a medicinal plant and a herbal tea, commonly used in Ayurveda, to promote purity and lightness in the body. In India, it is also known as a powerful anti-aging supplement.
According to various studies, holy basil is said to be effective in improving stress response due its phytochemical compounds, making it an interesting choice for adaptogenic formulations.
Holy basil leaves offer a rich source of essential oil, containing eugenol, nerol, camphor, and a variety of terpenes and flavonoids. Tulsi also has an important role within the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism, in which devotees perform worship involving holy basil plants or leaves.
